Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria — blue-green algae that grow in both fresh and saltwater and is found worldwide. However, it mostly grows in tropical climates. Though it recently hit the limelight as a superfood, people used it for centuries. The Aztecs were commonly known to consume these algae regularly, as were early African tribes.
